Energy Bill 2007
California's Title 20 and the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 Restricting use of probe start ballasts in the manufacture of metal halide luminaires, California's Title 20 legislation and the federal Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 dictate that all new 150W-500W metal halide luminaires must contain pulse start ballasts that are 88% efficient for magnetic or 90-92% for electronic. California's Title 20 went into effect on January 1, 2008, and the Energy Independence and Security Act will take effect nationwide on January 1, 2009. While Title 20 completely outlaws probe start ballasts in California, the federal legislation allows their use as long as they are 94% efficient. As a result of this high-efficiency requirement, new medium-wattage luminaires using this antiquated technology are expected to become obsolete in the marketplace after January 1, 2009. Indicating compliance, affected luminaires produced after January 1, 2009 must exhibit a circled "E" on both product packaging, and on ballast labels.
